What are HLS and M3U8?
HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) splits video into small segments and serves them with an .m3u8 playlist. A master playlist points to variant playlists at different resolutions and bitrates; a media playlist lists the actual video segments. The player picks the quality automatically based on network speed.
In IPTV, channels are mostly delivered as MPEG-TS (.ts) or HLS (.m3u8). The same channel may exist in both formats; trying the other one is a common fix when one does not work.
Browser limits
Browsers may block direct access to a stream on another domain because of CORS, and HTTP streams may be blocked as mixed content on HTTPS pages. The test tools report these situations clearly and, when needed, make the request through our temporary relay.
Frequently asked questions
My stream does not play in the browser but plays on my TV, why?
Browsers enforce CORS, mixed content (http/https) and codec restrictions. TV apps are not subject to them. The CORS Tester and HLS Stream Tester show which limit applies.
Do MPEG-TS streams play in a browser?
Not directly. HLS (.m3u8) does. On Xtream servers, changing the .ts extension to .m3u8 often works.
